2009 Buffalo Gold Coin Set
The Buffalo Gold 4 coin set comes with a $50,$25, $10, and $5 gold buffalos. The US Gold Buffalo coins became available for sale by the United States Mint in 2006. It is part of the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, under Title II- Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins, Sec. 201. Gold Bullion Coins. This act mandated the production of a gold coin with a face value of $50 (US) with a weight of 1 ounce, containing 99.99% (24 Karat) pure gold. However, the $5,$10, and $25 was not released until 2008. The coins are a modified version of James Earle Fraser's, 'Buffalo nickel' or the '1913 Type 1.' Like the Indian head nickel, the US Gold Buffalo coin has an American Indian head on the obverse (front) side and an American Bison on the reverse (back) side.
Each coin in the set has the same design but each denomination gets a little smaller and lighter as you go down in denomination. The $50 US Gold Buffalo coin is the larget with a mass of 31.108g (1.0001 troy oz.), diameter of 32.7 mm (1.28 in.), and a thickness of 2.95 mm (0.116 in). The coin has a reeded edge. The modified US Gold Buffalo coin's reverse side reads: $50 1 oz. .9999 FINE GOLD.
Buffalo gold coins are a great investment because not only is the coin itself valuable but you also get the value of the gold. This set is a great addition to any gold coin collection. It also makes a great gift or even something that can be passed down to children or grandchildren.
