A Brief History
The circulation of coins first started in the United States in 1783. The first commemorative coin release followed the introduction of Public Law 52-203 on August 5, 1892. As for the American Eagle Gold proof coins, they followed the start of public law 99-185. The American Eagle Gold proof coins first came into existence on September 8, 1986.
Following the start of their production, West Point became appointed as the main producer of the American Eagle series of coins. This additionally includes the responsibility of proof and uncirculated coins, made from platinum, silver, and gold. Currently, they continue as one of the main producers for mints in gold and silver. However, the Philadelphia mint facility does mint the American Eagle coin on occasion.
Each year the coins are produced, never do both of the facilities produce the same series. Two thousand nine became the first year since the coin's release that they were not produced. According to the law the US Mint must produce both Silver and Gold American Eagle coins with enough to meet the current consumer demands. However, the demand exceeded the amount of available supplies, which led to the cancellation of the coin's production.
