South Africa is the world's largest producer of gold. Gold bullion coins were introduced in South Africa in 1967 when they released Krugerrands which in turn made it possible for the nation to market their extensive supply of gold emerging from the deep mines located around Johannesburg. Because they were designed to be distributed as currency, they were minted out of a far more resilient gold alloy which set them apart from the majority of other bullion coins. In the 1980's Krugerrands made up 90% of the gold coin market.

In spite of the coin's standing as legal tender, economic sanctions against South Africa because of its policy of apartheid made the Krugerrand an outlawed import in many Western nations throughout the 70s and 80s.The sanctions were lifted in 1994 when the nation ended Apartheid.

The Krugerrand is named after Boer statesman Paul Kruger, the president that served 4 terms in the old South African Republic; the obverse bears an image of his face. The reverse side displays a springbok, which is a national symbol of South Africa.

In later years other countries followed the success of the Krugerrand and produced their own bullion coins, however this was long after millions of ounces of gold Krugerrands were sold all over the world.

Over the years, private mints have tried to cash in on the extreme popularity of the South African Krugerrand by trying to copy their style. These coins aren't provided through South Africa's Mint or South Africa's government so they aren't considered official coinage or as legal tender.

The Krugerrands are made by the South African Mint, and are provided in single ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce of genuine gold weight.

The first gold coins made an appearance in the 6th century, BC at about the same time in both Asia and Europe. In the region of ancient China, the earliest gold coins had been cast in the Chu State, in about the same time period. The coins were round with had a square hole in the center. These Chinese gold coins were inscribed with Yuan Ying, Ying for the Chu State capitol and Yuan which means money in the Chinese language.

In 1982 the Republic of China's Panda series of gold coins was hugely successful. The United States response to the gold coins with their cute and cuddly panda images was extremely favorable, hence the principle of a premium priced gold coin was founded. By 1987 coin enthusiasts interest in the Panda coins was extremely high and because of the high interest, the 1982 Pandas were known to trade for more than $3000 at times. The Chinese went on to create a continuous demand for the coins in spite of the market rate of gold by transforming the design on the coins on a yearly basis. The gold Pandas are not just used coinage; they are quite frequently used in the creation of jewelry like bracelets and necklaces.

The Panda gold coins continued to be released by China for a increased percentage over the current market price for gold and standard bullion coins, and they are the true pioneers of modern day coin collection. The images on the Panda coins continued to change until 2002. In addition, Panda coins were also made out of silver. In 1997, for just one year, China cast a new gold coin; the Good Fortune or Good Luck Coin.

Mexico is a famous tourist destination with hot sunny weather, beautiful beaches and rich cultural and historical heritage. Is it a wonder why so many people from all over the word choose Mexico as their vacation spot or travel destination?

Delve deeper into its history and you'll start learning more about its ancient Aztec Empire. In the ancient Aztec city, they found a way to use gold. In fact, gold was used as ornaments to decorate clothing during this era.

Mexico was then taken under Spanish rule. During the Spanish rule in this country, the coins they had were very similar to the ones in Spain. Even after the declaration of independence in 1810, the coins in Mexico remained in Spanish style. The coins didn't change until 1864 when they adopted peso-based decimal currency.

At present, Mexican coins are often seen on display for sale. These coins are bullion coins. They are kept as an investment in store value. Unlike ordinary coins, these are not used in regular daily commerce. Mexican bullion coins made from precious metal are usually gold or silver.

A growing number of investors and coin collectors from all over the world are acquiring these Mexican coins for their private collections. The coins come in various denominations. The older coins are denominated in escudo. For example, an 8 escudo coin made of gold would have a diameter of 37 millimeters. The more modern coins are in Peso currency. Denominations in Peso are 1, 2, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Pesos. Some coins also come in quarter ounce, 1 ounce (or 1,000 pesos).

The prices of these Mexican bullion coins depend on various aspects. The date and origin of the coin is one big reason in determining the pricing of a coin. For example, an old 8 escudo coin will have a higher asking price simply because of its historical value. The real content or weight of gold in a coin is also a factor in determining the value and price of the coin. Of course, the higher the gold content, the more expensive the coin becomes.

Investors and collectors who wish to buy gold coins with small premiums may consider the Mexican 50 Pesos gold coin. This coin contains 37.5 grams of gold. Nowadays, the coins are not made of pure gold. For more strength, most of these coins have been alloyed with copper. The Mexican 50 Pesos gold coin is often recommended to people just starting to get into coin collecting because of its sheer beauty. This coin is also 20% larger than the other popular coins.

You may be a budding coin collector or a long-time hobbyist. Either way, you'll definitely appreciate the beauty and intangible value of the Mexican gold bullion coins. Keep in mind, these are not just pieces of metal, these are miniature works of art and pieces of Mexican history.

There are roughly 3,000 islands. The population is estimated at 310,000. Britain took control of the islands in 1626. Spain did not follow up on Columbus's discovery in 1492, and made several claims, but they remained British. Independence was granted in 1973. They remain a member of the British Commonwealth.

Catalogues, dealers and collectors have a challenge determining value and type of coins because of discrepancies in the minting. A lot of variety exists, especially in Bahamas gold coins. The first gold coins were minted in 1967, celebrating the new constitution and its adoption. Some of the same coins were created with different quality, such as the purity of gold, weigh, and size.

Also produced in 1967 as both uncirculated and proofs was a gold $500 coin with Columbus, sword sheathed, standing on the deck of his ship.

Also called Bahamian coins, there have been several specific issues of gold coins minted in The Bahamas. The first gold coin was minted in 1967, in honor the Adoption of the new constitution. The coins are in $10, $0, $50, and $100 denominations.

The next issue of gold coins came in 1973, celebrating independence. That coin was a $50 issue. In 1974, a $100 gold coin was minted to celebrate the first anniversary of independence. The following year, a $50 and $100 gold coin were issued regarding independence, as well.

There have been complaints that the gold coins are being made with less than the standard amount of fine gold because the collector will still buy, with a minimal variance of profit. Although it seems objectionable to some, other minting organizations, such as The Franklin Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint, have created coins for The Bahamas to be sold specifically to collectors.

The country is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Originally occupied by the Taino Indians, they were virtually annihilated by the Spanish within 25 years of being ‘discovered' by Christopher Columbus in 1492.

The French established a presence in the early 1600s and the Spanish ceded the Western third of the island to them in 1697. The colony became one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean via forestry and sugar production, but only because they imported thousands of African slaves. The degradation of the land through unsustainable practices is part of their economic woes today.

In the late 18th century, a revolt among the nearly half a million slaves caused the downfall of Toussaint L'Ouverture. In 1804, Haiti became the first independent black republic, with a history marked by struggle and conflict.

Haitian gold coins extend back almost to its formation, but officially recognized Haitian coinage begins in 1967, when they issued five different denomination coins (ranging in value from 20 gourdes to 1000 gourdes) in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the election of President for Life, ‘Papa Doc' Duvalier. The 1000 G coin shows a left ¾ profile of Duvalier listing his title, and with his age (60) in a wreath, the reverse shows the coat of arms of Haiti- a palm tree centered between flags and cannons on the shore, and the motto L'Union Fait La Force beneath. Above it is the legend Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite. Other coins in the series show different slave with machetes from working the fields, with the 5th being an African dancing for joy.

Unlike most coinage, Haitian coins duplicate the reverse using the coat of arms, and the obverse depicting different subjects.

Just because there is always a current gold price, this certainly does not mean that you are always going to get the best price on your gold. If you are in the gold trading business, then you are going to need to make sure that you are always on top of your game, and this means checking what the gold price is, because otherwise you could get suckered into accepting much less for your gold than you should.

It is not hard to keep track of what the gold price is, and there are a few methods in particular that are common and which are going to be helpful to you if you want to keep track of what the gold price is.

Be Smart About it

So you want to keep track of the gold price and what it is at all times, but how to do it? Getting a gold dealer is one of the best things that you can ever do if you want to stay on top of your game and make sure that you are always know what the price of gold is going for. This is basically someone who is going to work for you and make sure that you don’t have to worry about the little details like this.

It is pretty much like what a real estate broker would be if you were buying a house. It is someone who is there who is going to help take some of the weight off your shoulders and make sure that you are having the most success with your endeavor here.

Besides getting a dealer, there are other ways that you can do it as well. There are some online companies that you can go through where you can get a listing of the current gold price and then you can actually keep it right on your desktop. This way, whenever you sign online, you are going to be able to see it right away and not have to worry about going online.

Or if you would rather receive information in your email, you can always sign up to receive notifications from different companies who will then send you emails full of information whenever it is necessary, for instance if the price of gold goes up or down, you will be notified, so this is a great idea because it is easy and convenient for you.

Anyone who wants to get into something as serious as gold coin investing is going to need to realize that this is not just like going out and buying a gold ring. There are a lot of details that need to be understood when it comes to gold coin investing, if an investor wants to have any success at least.

Getting Into it

Doing research and getting advice is going to be very important when getting started in gold coin investing. For instance one would have to learn about where and how they could find a deal on investing their gold, and what the best markets are to target. There is no way that someone could get into something like this unless they were educated on it first.

There are lots of investors these days who have flocked to gold funds, but how can you really know it is all worth it is the really big question out there. Well you should know for one when it comes to gold coin investing that funds invested in gold have been tipped heavily over recent years, but only in this recent year has gold shot up in value as much as it has.

There are now more people interested in buying and selling gold than there have been in a while, and so there is no better time than now for a newcomer to jump on the boat and get in on this hopeful success of theirs. Just make sure that you know what you are doing before you make the leap otherwise you are going to be doing it blind.

Gold coin investing can be very prosperous, as long as you go about it the right way and get tips and advice from whoever you can. Also make sure that when you are buying gold coins, you are only doing it from a reputable seller, because you always want to be careful with who you are doing business with. Just as with any other type of business, there are going to be the scammers out there and you are going to need to use common sense if you want to avoid them and get quality gold at a great price.

Once you have been investing for a while, you will learn your own tricks and ideas and will really start to get good at it, and probably have even more of an interest in it now that you know what you are doing.
